Waarom Zeg Je Dat, Neelie?

"De eurozone valt niet uit elkaar als Griekenland wordt gedwongen de euromunt op te geven. 'Er wordt steeds gezegd: als je één land laat uitstappen of vraagt om uit te stappen, dan stort het hele bouwwerk in. Maar dat is gewoon niet waar.' Dat zegt Europees Commissaris Neelie Kroes (VVD) dinsdag in een interview met de Volkskrant. 'Er is absoluut geen man overboord als we iemand missen uit de eurozone.'"

Er is misschien "geen man overboord als we iemand missen uit de Eurozone", maar dit zou dwars tegen de logica van de EU ingaan. De EU is immers geen economisch project, maar een politiek project. De economische en finaciële unificatie van Europa is niet het doel van de EU, maar een middel om een politieke unie te creëren en desnoods te forceren. Uitgaande van deze politieke logica zou men de politieke ambities van de EU niet zozeer laten leiden door economische overwegingen, men zou eerder de economische situatie willen gebruiken om de politieke ambities van de EU te verwezenlijken. Dit is precies wat “president” Herman van Rompuy duidelijk maakte in zijn toespraak bij de afscheid van Trichet:

“we cannot have a common currency, a common monetary policy, and leave everything else to the States involved. And yet this is what we have experienced. There needs to be a coherence of policies and institutions at the European level […]  The euro area is as strong as the weakest link in the chain. We have all become so dependent on one other that we cannot afford continuing divergences within a monetary union. Each member of the euro area holds the fate of the whole euro area in their hands. […] The crisis in the euro area requires us to do more, in terms of both fiscal discipline and economic integration. This will come about through the new Stability and Growth Pact, as well as the Euro-Plus Pact. But we need to go further, and we need both fiscal discipline and economic and fiscal integration. Not only to punish the sinners but also to link our policies together, and demonstrate that we share a common destiny. We need to acknowledge that this means a loss of sovereignty for all, and not only for the countries in difficulty.” (zie hier)

Het is daarom ook geen wonder dat deze uitspraken van mevrouw Kroes haaks staan:

"[...] op het officiële standpunt van de Europese Commissie. Die voorspelt een financiële crisis wanneer Griekenland uit de eurozone wordt gegooid."

De interessant vraag is waarom mevrouw Kroes juist nu deze dwarse uitspraken doet. De spreekwoordelijke ratten die het zinkende schip verlaten? Interne machtsstrijd in Brussel? Weten ze iets dat wij nog niet weten, iets over Griekenland of Portugal misschien? Binnenlandse politiek? Een dreigement richting Griekenland? We hebben goede journalisten nodig...

Updtae: "Eurocommissaris Neelie Kroes (VVD) heeft tijdens een vergadering van de Europese Commissie afstand genomen van haar uitspraken over Griekenland. Dat meldt een woordvoerder van de Commissie woensdag." (zie hier)
