Ashton en Abbas: de Fantasiewereld van Onze Meesters in Brussel

In de Euobserver konden we de afgelopen dagen een verslag lezen van een toesprak die mevrouw Catherine Ashton, de buitenlandgezant van de Europese Unie,  heeft gehouden tijdens een politiek overleg over de positie van de EU in kwestie de erkenning van Palestina.

“She began the meeting in Strasbourg with a formal statement against Israel's new decision to build 1,100 Jewish housing units on Palestinian land at its Gilo settlement. "This plan should be reversed. Settlement activity threatens the viability of an agreed two-state solution and runs contrary to the Israeli stated commitment to resume negotiations," she said. She later added on a personal note: "I have condemned settlement activity every time it was announced - I have made six statements this year, plus one Quartet [a joint EU, Russia, UN and US body] statement plus the comment today ... Each time I have met him [Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu] I have told him settlements are illegal under international law."

She also praised Palestinian leaders Mahmoud Abbas and Salam Fayyad: "They are people who hold the values we hold dear in their hearts. They believe in the values we hold ...”

Een aantal opmerkingen en vragen naar aanleiding van deze opmerkelijke uitspraken van mevrouw Ashton, het buitenlandgezant van de EU:

De bouwactiviteiten van Israel  in de wijk Gilo, Jeruzalem, zouden volgens het internationale recht misschien illegaal zijn, maar de erkenning van Palestina, waar mevrouw Ashton in haar toespraak voor pleit, zou volgens het internationale recht ook illegaal zijn:

"We, the undersigned, attorneys from across the world who are involved in general matters of international law, as well as being closely concerned with the Israeli-Palestinian dispute, appeal to you to use your influence and authority among the member states of the UN, with a view to preventing the adoption of the resolution that the Palestinian delegation intends to table at the forthcoming session of the General Assembly, to recognize a Palestinian state "within the 1967 borders. By all standards and criteria, such a resolution, if adopted, would be in stark violation of all the agreements between Israel and the Palestinians, as well as contravening UN Security Council Resolutions 242 (1967) and 338 (1973) and those other resolutions based thereon.” (lees verder)

Een vraag: vindt mevrouw Ashton dat het internationale recht wel van toepassing is op Israël, maar niet op de Palestijnen?

"This past August 27, two days short of the anniversary of the Khartoum summit’s opening, Abbas chose to echo its rejectionist sentiments. He announced three “no's” of his own: no to recognizing a Jewish state, no to tolerating Jewish settlement blocs and no to forgoing the demand that Israel be overrun by untold millions of hostile Arabs (marketed to all and sundry as the Right of Return).”(lees verder)

“Abbas Zaki [een prominent lid van Abbas’ Fatah-beweging): Een akkoord zou moeten gebaseerd worden op de grenzen van 4 juni 1967. Wanneer wij zeggen dat een akkoord op deze grenzen zou moeten worden gebaseerd, begrijpt president [Abbas], begrijpen wij en weet iedereen dat het grotere doel niet in één keer kan worden verwezenlijkt. Wanneer Israël zich uit Jeruzalem terugtrekt, de 650.000 kolonisten evacueert en de [veiligheids-]muur ontmantelt, wat zal er dan van Israël worden? Dat zal het einde [van Israël] betekenen Als wij zeggen dat wij Israël willen wegvagen [van de map]… Komaan zeg, zoiets [zeggen] ligt veel te moeilijk. Een vraag: vindt mevrouw Ashton ook dat de staat Israël niet zal mogen voortbestaan?

“We have frankly said, and always will say: If there is an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, we won’t agree to the presence of one Israeli in it,” Abbas told reporters in Ramallah.” (lees verder)

“In June, Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas told the Arab League that the future Palestinian state should be free of Israelis (that is Jews, since virtually no other Israelis live in the West Bank). He reiterated this vision of a Judenrein Palestine last month, telling a delegation of visiting members of Congress that "I am seeking a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with Jerusalem as its capital, empty of settlements." Een vraag: vindt mevrouw Ashton ook dat Palestina Judenrein zou moeten zijn?

“I keep getting emails asking me about his [Abbas’] Holocaust denial. I deal with this in my book, History on Trial, briefly at the end. To summarize, even more briefly: He did engage in denial when he wrote his Ph.D. thesis in the early 1980s in Moscow. More recently he has said that were he writing it now he would not have said what he did [there were only 1,000,000 victims etc.] I wish he had made a more vigorous retraction.” (lees verder)

Een vraag: vindt mevrouw Ashton ook dat de Zionisten (lees Israël) de feiten van de Holocaust manipuleren en overdrijven voor politiek gewin?

"The US and EU taxpayers need to ask their governments why they continue to fund and train Palestinian security forces that are harassing and intimidating women [...] Palestinian women have become the latest victims of a security crackdown launched by Palestinian Authority security forces that are funded, equipped and trained by Americans and Europeans” (lees verder).

Een vraag: vindt mevrouw Ashton ook dat politieke tegenstanders van Abbas geïntimideerd mogen worden en dat ze zonder een eerlijk proces in de gevangenissen van de Palestijnse Autoriteit mogen belanden?

Een vraag: vindt mevrouw Ashton dat dit een waardevolle besteding is van het geld van de Europese belastingbetaler, van zogenaamde ontwikkelingshulp?

“Palestinian Authority school textbooks and official government media practice routine indoctrination and denial of Israel’s right to exist, according to a report to be issued on Sunday by Palestinian Media Watch. PMW founder and director Itamar Marcus said on Thursday, “The denial of Israel’s right to exist is one of the foundations of Palestinian identity and one of the most basic, intrinsic problems” preventing a peaceful resolution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.”(lees verder)

Een vraag: vindt mevrouw Ashton dat Palestijnse kinderen op school geïndoctrineerd mogen worden om Israëlische kinderen te haten?

“Shabaneh said that many Palestinians in the West Bank have lost hope that the PA would one day be reformed. “The Palestinian Authority is very corrupt and needs to be overhauled,” he said. Shabaneh cited several specific cases of alleged corruption within Fatah and the PA in the course of the interview, including asserting that Fatah personnel stole much of a $3.2 million donation given by the US to Fatah ahead of the 2006 Palestinian parliamentary election, won by Hamas, which had been intended to improve Fatah’s image and boost its chances of winning.” (lees verder)

Een vraag: vindt mevrouw Ashton dat politici op systematische wijze (gedoneerd!) publiek geld mogen stelen en gebruiken voor privedoeleinden?

Het gezonde verstand en het fatsoen nopen ons om aan te nemen dat mevrouw Ashton de hierboven gestelde vragen negatief zou hebben beantwoord. Maar, zoals de hierboven genoemde feiten aantonen, dit maakt haar steun  voor de erkenning van Palestina en de uitspraak dat ‘wij in dezelfde waarden geloven als Abbas’ alleen maar merkwaardiger. Wat bezielt onze meesters in Brussel? Het lijkt alsof die mensen in een zelfgemaakte fantasiewereld leven waar de echte werled geen ingang meer heeft.

De Amerikaanse journalist en schrijver Upton Sinclair zei ooit:

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it."

Was het maar zo banaal...
